Ever wonder what goes on in that big, imposing building on Miller Trunk Highway?

The Natural Resources Research Institute, part of the University of Minnesota Duluth, conducts a wide variety of fascinating research focused on improving the economic and environmental vitality of our region for sustainable communities. Established in 1983, the institute has built a tremendous reputation in many sectors. June (Kallestad) Breneman, NRRI public relations manager, will introduce Harbortown Rotary to its research and people in a presentation on April 15.  Please come join us.

GET INVOLVED IN THE ROTARY FRIENDSHIP EXCHANGE

This May, District 5580 will be hosting a Rotary Friendship Exchange Team from New Delhi India.   The Rotary Friendship Exchange (RFE) program provides a means for Rotarians to visit other Districts where they will be hosted by fellow Rotarians with food, lodging and transportation and then reciprocating by hosting Rotarians from the other District.   The participating Districts organize the exchanges through their own RFE committees.   The intent is to make the exchanges fun and inexpensive for all concerned.

The New Delhi team will be arriving in Thunder Bay on May 19th, staying there until May 23rd when they will travel to Duluth for a three night stay then moving on to the Detroit Lakes-Fargo-Moorhead area until their departure from Fargo on May 29th.    The District 5580 RFE Committee is seeking host families in these three areas for the visit.  We are expecting six couples and each couple needs a host family. Members of the RFE committee will work with host families to organize transportation and events for the visitors during their stay.

A team of Rotarians from District 5580 will in turn visit the New Delhi District in February 2016.    This team has not yet been selected, but one of the considerations in selecting team members will be whether they have hosted visiting RFE team members.   The outbound team from District 5580 will have an amazing experience in New Delhi.   Among the many attractions to be visited is the Taj Mahal.  In addition, our outbound team will also visit the Rotary District in the state of Tamil Nadu India, which is the area where our clubs have done a number of humanitarian projects.    Rotary connections are a safe way to visit exotic corners of the world and to forge friendships with people in other countries.   Give it a try.

Right now, we have four host families identified for the incoming visit to the Duluth area.   We need two more host families and also assistance with transportation.   Anyone interested in hosting or joining in on the activities, please contact Mike Cochran, District 5580 Rotary Friendship Exchange Chair.

I made it! I made it through the year as Rotary President that is! I can’t believe how fast this year went by. Last night’s District Banquet was my last official duty as I handed over the “Home Club of the District Governor” Banner to the incoming President of the Durham club. It was certainly… More President’s Corner Blog – June 25, 2015

Spring is finally here! The first quarter of the year is already over and I am left with 3 more months of being the President of this great club. We have certainly accomplished a lot over the past 9 months, but there is a lot of on agenda over the next few months as well.… More President’s Corner – April 3, 2015

Is it spring yet? I think we’re all a little tired of the winter weather that has hit us 3 times in the past 2 weeks. We’ve all had disruptions at work and with our kids’ school and of course with missing our Rotary meetings the past 2 weeks! Hopefully this will be the last… More President’s Corner – February 27, 2015

Another month has passed and we are getting closer to our first ever Casino Night on March 28th! Each member is being assigned 4 tickets to sell. The tickets are $75 each and include heavy hors d’oeuvres, 2 free drink tickets (a cash bar is available as well), and a fun night of Vegas style… More President’s Corner – January 29, 2015

Happy New Year! 2015 is off to a very busy start for me both personally and in my business and things are about to start picking up with Rotary as well. The two biggest items for the calendar so far are the District Conference and our first annual Casino Night fundraiser. The District Conference is… More President’s Corner – January 9, 2015
