This Week's Program:
Jordan van der Hagen, Highway 61 Revisited
Join Harbortown at our Wednesday morning meeting when we are joined by Jordan van der Hagen, Assoc. ASLA, Landscape Designer at ARI (Architectural Resources Inc.) who will speak with us about why he is taking a fresh look at Duluth's downtown interstate.

When I-35 was built, nobody saw the warehouses and scrapyards of Canal Park becoming the tourist destination they are today. As such - when the interstate cut off downtown from the neighborhood, few were concerned. Things have changed, and at present Canal Park and the associated waterfront are some of the most visited places in our city.  Getting rid of I-35 will open up opportunity for transformative change within our downtown.

Jordan is experienced in a wide range of environmental design work ranging from residential backyard gardens to full-scale community comprehensive plans. He is broadly interested in all fields of design and is working in the field of landscape architecture in Duluth, Minnesota. He also works extensively as a volunteer advocate for public spaces, and participates in events, programs, and organizations which push for creating a more resilient city. He is the founder of the Duluth Waterfront Collective, a grassroots group of community members interested in seeing a more equitable, sustainable, and connected Duluth.

Junior Rotarian 2021-22 Kickoff!
We are so very excited we will be hosting the 2021-2022 Harbortown Jr. Rotarian kick-off breakfast this Wednesday at our regular morning meeting.

Lisa Krochak-Mitchell and the entire New Generations Committee have been hard at work preparing to host our junior Rotarians in person this school year and make this one of the best year's for our high school Rotarians!

They will be meeting for their annual kick-off breakfast prior to our regular meeting and joining us during the program.

Please welcome them to your table and take every opportunity to engage with the young professionals at upcoming meetings. Your mentorship and words of wisdom will have a lasting impact on these young adults as they make their way into the world with the values of our Harbortown Club.

Lifelong Learning with Rotary
We have all adapted and found new ways of connecting during the COVID-19 pandemic. The same is true for education in many places around the world: COVID-19 disrupted learning for children and adults. But amid the challenge, educators and communities are using their creativity to find ways to keep students learning. The Rotary Foundation has funded projects and programs like these that increase communities’ capacity to offer a basic education and promote literacy:

Upcoming Program Duties
If you have an upcoming program duty (please check the upcoming duty roster), please be sure to secure a speaker and provide notice to Rick Oase (rickoase@yahoo.com) or Stephanie Judd (sljudd@gmail.com) as soon as that speaker is confirmed. If you are unable to confirm a speaker, consider other program ideas like a Ted Talk, presenting yourself on a relevant topic or your business, or creating some excitement for a community organization you are passionate about. It is your program, so think about what is interesting and engaging to you and share it with others!

If for some reason you are unable to switch duties with another member or you have simply exhausted all efforts to find a speaker, please notify Rick or Stephanie no later than 3 business days before the meeting (the Friday before the meeting your program is scheduled).

The Holiday Inn has dedicated a laptop for weekly Harbortown use. All presenters need to bring is a USB drive with the PowerPoint presentation (or whatever is wanted to be shown on the projector while speaking). Please share this information with your program's presenter.

Because Harbortown is asked by the Holiday Inn for RSVPs each week, Rob will RSVP each weekly presenter to ensure the presenter gets breakfast. If the presenter is bringing a guest, please let Rob know so he can RSVP the guest, as well. Questions? Please contact Rob Haglin (rhaglin@awkuettel.com).

Thank you for your help and thank you to all who are working hard to find engaging content for our upcoming sessions!
