This Week's Program: Ann Glumac and Spirit Mountain
Last year the Spirit Mountain Recreation Area board of directors named Ann Glumac as Spirit Mountain's interim executive director. Glumac is the former president of the Great Lakes Aquarium, former executive director of seven other nonprofits and is a former deputy commissioner of both the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and Department of Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation.
Spirit Mountain is home to the region's only Alpine Coaster, a Zip Ride, Scenic Chairlift, Jumping Pillow, Putt-putt Golf, some of the Midwest's best gravity mountain biking trails, and a Superior Hiking Trail trailhead and loop.
Karl Everett has been in contact with Segundo from Mano a Mano to provide a Laguna Sulti well update:
"The ell drilling equipment is operating. Prior to arriving in Chirusi, the drill equipment completed the flushing of the previously drilled well in Punata.
Today, the photos show the drill has been leveled on site. The staff and volunteers have two "fosas", small ponds, that are used to retain water. The second one retains the sludge that is coming out of the well being drilled.
Our engineer estimates that we will reach good water at about 80 meters deep, based on our experience at Tajamar and Laguna Carmen. Assuming that we will not have any delays from equipment breakdown, the Chirusi well should be completed within two weeks.
Community residents of Chirusi are very excited that soon they will have water in their community thanks to the funding from Rotary and Mano a Mano. Also, residents are very excited that they, for the first time in their lives, will be able to access water in their houses thanks to the piping installation that Mano a Mano will complete for each of 212 households of the community of Chirusi."

Following is a THANK YOU message from District Governor 2020-21, Bob McLean.
Dear Rotarians of District 5580:
You may recall a little exercise we did during our virtual District Conference. Sharing just ONE WORD that described this Rotary year;PANDEMIC, ZOOM, UNMUTE, quarantine, masks, distancing, sanitizing, shutdown, relief, stimulus, DEI, environment, courage, heroes, vaccine, hybrid, FUN… and many more.
Of the many words shared a couple stood out: RESILIENCE and ENGAGEMENT! With all that was experienced, endured, and learned over the course of our year together, YOUR resilience and engagement has been truly inspiring and is most “Meaningful and Memorable” for me in this “Year of Opening Opportunities”!
At every level, District 5580 is so fortunate to have exceptional Rotarians serving as our committed Club Officers, talented Assistant Governors, dedicated District Teams/Committees & Chairs, wonderful District Executives, and our amazing District Governor line. But at the heart of our district and our clubs are YOU, the Engaged Rotarian, who fully embrace “Doing Good in the World thru Service Above Self”.
In DG club visits a definition of a Rotarian was shared (borrowed from RI CEO/GS John Hewko). When we build a park, a clinic, a school, a well; we are building PEACE. When we provide dictionaries for 3rd graders or support global scholars; we are building PEACE. When we advocate for Maternal/Infant health, the end to Human Trafficking, the eradication of Polio; we are building PEACE. What is a Rotarian? WE ARE! We are Peace Builders, building Positive Peace; dedicated to “Doing Good in the World through Service Above Self.”
In this “year like no other…” It has been a genuine honor and joy to serve as the District Governor of 5580. Knowing who is to follow with DG Keith, DGE Kay, and DGN Dave, the future for District 5580 is incredibly bright; “The BEST is yet to come!”
A final reminder… We are all Rotarians, in part, because someone at the very beginning of our Rotary journey invited us to a club meeting. So... Be A Friend - Invite a Friend to Rotary!
May your experience as engaged Rotarians continue to be ”Meaningful and Memorable”.

If you have an upcoming program duty (please check the upcoming duty roster), please be sure to secure a speaker and provide notice to Rick Oase (rickoase@yahoo.com) or Stephanie Judd (sljudd@gmail.com) as soon as that speaker is confirmed. If you are unable to confirm a speaker, consider other program ideas like a Ted Talk, presenting yourself on a relevant topic or your business, or creating some excitement for a community organization you are passionate about. It is your program, so think about what is interesting and engaging to you and share it with others!
If for some reason you are unable to switch duties with another member or you have simply exhausted all efforts to find a speaker, please notify Rick or Stephanie no later than 3 business days before the meeting (the Friday before the meeting your program is scheduled).
The Holiday Inn has dedicated a laptop for weekly Harbortown use. All presenters need to bring is a USB drive with the PowerPoint presentation (or whatever is wanted to be shown on the projector while speaking). Please share this information with your program's presenter.
Because Harbortown is asked by the Holiday Inn for RSVPs each week, Rob will RSVP each weekly presenter to ensure the presenter gets breakfast. If the presenter is bringing a guest, please let Rob know so he can RSVP the guest, as well. Questions? Please contact Rob Haglin (rhanglin@awkuettl.com).
Thank you for your help and thank you to all who are working hard to find engaging content for our upcoming sessions!
