Why do people distrust vaccines? Anthropologist Heidi Larson explores how medical rumors originate, spread and fuel resistance to vaccines worldwide. While vaccines cannot escape the "political and social turbulence" that surrounds them, she says, the first step to stopping the spread of disease is to talk to people, listen and build trust.

Heidi J. Larson is anthropologist and founding Director of The Vaccine Confidence Project at the WHO Centre of Excellence. An internationally recognized leader working to address global vaccine hesitancy, Larson's research focuses on the analysis of social and political factors that can affect uptake of health interventions and influence policies. Her interest is centered on risk and rumor management -- from the clinical trials stage to the market delivery stage -- and on building public trust.

October Issue of Rotary Magazine Now Available Online

This is the second issue of the renamed and refreshed Rotary magazine. To mark World Polio Day on 24 October, we bring you stories about how Rotarians' efforts are paying off in polio eradication efforts — and about why we must remain focused on the goal of eradication even as we face a pandemic. We explain how contact tracing works in the fight against polio and other diseases, and hear from Rotary's partners in a roundtable discussion of the state of the eradication effort.
