This Week's Program: Superintendent John Magas, ISD709 District Update
With so much changing almost daily with COVID, learning targets and the well being of our area students, Superintendent John Magas will join our club tomorrow morning and provide us with the most up-to-date return to learn plan for the fall for ISD709.

John Magas joined Duluth Public Schools as Superintendent July 1, 2020.  The Board selected Mr. Magas following a months-long process which included hiring a search firm, a public process to develop a leadership profile, input from community groups and organizations and two rounds of public interviews.

Superintendent Magas’s experience includes Associate Superintendent of Continuous Improvement for the Green Bay Area School District in Wisconsin; Director of Secondary Teaching, Learning and Equity for the Sun Prairie Area School District in Wisconsin; Principal for the Appleton Area School District in Wisconsin and Assistant Principal for the Toppenish School District in Washington.

KA Bike Fest Wrap-up and Feedback

A message from KA Bike Fest Volunteer Coordinator, Carl Maki:

Thanks for all of your time, energy, and effort helping making the 2021 KA Bike Duluth Festival a success! We don’t have all of the statistical data completed yet however from our initial review we have surpassed our goals. We have already started our plans for next year. You made this event happen!  Working together we raised money for the programs we support and brought our great community together for a fun weekend.

We are working on improvements for next year and will be meeting in September to game plan for next year. If you have any feed back feel free to email me back or give me a shout (Carl: 218-481-4200.) We know there were some areas that the Festival fell short on, which means next year will even be more awesome.

On behalf of the entire KA Bike Festival committee team we sincerely appreciate you!!!!

Links to all the photographs will be made available soon and we will provide those in next week's issue of the Scuttlebutt along with more of the wrap-up details.

REMINDER: Dragon Boat 2022 Survey
REMINDER: You received a Google survey from my personal Gmail account.  If you did not see it come through, make sure to check your spam/junk folder.

Preliminary indications are that Club 25 is enthusiastic about taking on a partnership role in the festival.   Superior Sunrise Rotary is no longer a festival partner.

The Harbortown Rotary Board of Directors feels that our club membership needs to review our club’s role in the festival, given that our club has committed to a major role in the Bike Fest for five years.

A survey has been sent to each club member asking the following question: Are you willing to donate volunteer hours to both the Bike Fest and the Dragon Boat Fest in 2022?   There will be only a choice of yes or no.

Please be sure to vote by Friday, August 27th.
August Rotary Magazine

The new Rotary International President has announced a significant goal for the coming year: to increase Rotary membership to 1.3 million by July 2022, and the call to action is simple: Each One, Bring One.

"As we make membership a priority this year, let us focus on diversity by reaching out to younger people and especially to women. Every club should celebrate its new members, and every Rotarian who sponsors a member will be personally recognized by me. And those who are successful in bringing in 25 or more members will be part of our new Membership Society," says Shekhar Mehta.

Each month Rotary magazine asks Rotarians to respond to a new monthly What Would you Do? question. Email magazine@rotary.org to answer this month's question and perhaps see your response in writing in the September issue!

A prominent business leader recently joined your Rotary club. They run a global business and their customers are primarily Rotarians. Your club’s leadership team decides to pay this new member’s way to the next Rotary International Convention; they think the experience will inspire the new member to get more involved in club activities. The member mentions that they plan to man a booth promoting their business in the House of Friendship during the entire convention and probably will not have time to attend sessions.

What would you do?

Upcoming Program Duties
If you have an upcoming program duty (please check the upcoming duty roster), please be sure to secure a speaker and provide notice to Rick Oase (rickoase@yahoo.com) or Stephanie Judd (sljudd@gmail.com) as soon as that speaker is confirmed. If you are unable to confirm a speaker, consider other program ideas like a Ted Talk, presenting yourself on a relevant topic or your business, or creating some excitement for a community organization you are passionate about. It is your program, so think about what is interesting and engaging to you and share it with others!

If for some reason you are unable to switch duties with another member or you have simply exhausted all efforts to find a speaker, please notify Rick or Stephanie no later than 3 business days before the meeting (the Friday before the meeting your program is scheduled).

The Holiday Inn has dedicated a laptop for weekly Harbortown use. All presenters need to bring is a USB drive with the PowerPoint presentation (or whatever is wanted to be shown on the projector while speaking). Please share this information with your program's presenter.

Because Harbortown is asked by the Holiday Inn for RSVPs each week, Rob will RSVP each weekly presenter to ensure the presenter gets breakfast. If the presenter is bringing a guest, please let Rob know so he can RSVP the guest, as well. Questions? Please contact Rob Haglin (rhanglin@awkuettl.com).

Thank you for your help and thank you to all who are working hard to find engaging content for our upcoming sessions!

Upcoming Program Duties:

October 27: Andres Gonzalez: Dave Uric, Twin Metals
November 3: Keith Kylmala, Rotary Foundation Day
November 10: Evening Fellowship Gathering
November 17: Tony Hansen
November 24: Bob Lindquist
