This Week's Program: Dr. Tony Barrett, Reflections of 2020 and Forecast for 2021

Dr. Tony Barrett, Professor Emeritus of Economics from St. Scholastica will join Harbortown virtually to share his thoughts on the past year and provide some insight into what 2021 may have to bring to our economy.

Dr. Barrett came to St. Scholastica in 1990 as an assistant professor of economics and taught for over 28 years. From 2004 to 2008, Dr. Barrett was the Athletic Director at the college and made a number of strategic changes to the program including improvements to the track and field programs, worked on the committee to add football and women's hockey, and added men's and women's Nordic ski teams.

Dr. Barrett has dedicated his life to economics and has been a source of knowledge for many in the area on local and national economic outlooks and analysis.

Harbortown Holiday Party 2020 - Going Virtual
Save the date for this year’s Zoom Holiday Party.  Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at 6:00 PM.  (Reminder that there will be NO morning meeting on Dec. 9.)

We will be sharing in some good fellowship, fun holiday antics and even take a walk down memory lane - so stay tuned!

To do our part in supporting the community and our small businesses during the recent shut-down, we are encouraging each Rotarian who will be celebrating with us, to order your dinner from a local restaurant to enjoy during the holiday party. And of course, enjoy the adult beverage of your choice, or just pour a glass of egg nog!

If you would like to assist with planning please email, text or call Heather heather.salfer@jamarcompany.us (218) 391-10003  or Jeremy at Jeremy@caduluth.com (218) 349-2245.

Annual Holiday Coffee Sale
The annual Harbortown coffee sale is happening now!

The Harbortown blend is  the same flavor profile as Velvet Hammer roasted by European Roasterie located in Le Center, Minnesota.  The coffee is from 100% arabica beans which are grown at higher altitude than robust beans and contain less caffeine!  Timothy Tulloch, founder of this 28 year old roasting concern, began his coffee career flying his Cessna from plantation to plantation in Africa’s coffee countries sourcing beans for Schluter S.A. An East African company founded in 1856.

Harbortown members are selling 12 oz. bags of ground or beans for only $10 each. There is free delivery for orders of $20 or more in the Twin Ports area. These bags make great holiday gifts for clients, customers, friends or just for the home or office.

Orders can be placed by emailing Fundraising Chair, Tony Hansen at ahansen@allete.com. Payments can be made via check (payable to Harbortown Rotary) or Venmo to Tony Hansen (@Tony_Hansen). When paying via Venmo, please be sure to include your name and address in the notes field for delivery purposes.

Upcoming Program Duties
During these challenging times during COVID, it has become an even greater challenge securing weekly program presenters. But this time also affords the opportunity of the ease of a Zoom presentation versus which can be a bonus for a busy presenter.

If you have an upcoming program duty (or if you are unsure, please check the upcoming duty roster) please be sure to secure a speaker and provide notice to Don O'Connor (Don@duluthbx.com) as soon as that speaker is confirmed. If you are unable to confirm a speaker who can present virtually, you could look at options for a Ted Talk, consider presenting yourself on a relevant topic or your business, or create some excitement for a community youth organization you are passionate about. It is your program, so think about what is interesting and engaging to you and share it with others!

Even during our virtual meetings, we want to present engaging content and make the meetings meaningful for those that are attending the weekly sessions. We've hosted several prospective members and we want to keep them coming back with great content.

If for some reason you are unable to switch duties with another member or you have simply exhausted all efforts to find a speaker, please notify Don no later than 3 business days before the meeting (the Friday before the meeting your program is scheduled) whenever possible.

Thank you for your help with this and thank you to all who are working hard to find engaging content for our upcoming sessions!

Upcoming Program Duties:

June 16: Fred Rouse
June 23: President's Dinner: Ridgeview Country Club
June 30: TBD

Leave of Absence Procedure
There have been a number of questions during this time regarding leave of absence and the procedure for submitting a leave.  If you would like to submit a leave of absence, please visit the Harbortown Rotary home page under the Home Page Download Files section or contact admin@harbortownrotary.com to obtain the LOA form.

Below are guidelines regarding the Leave Of Absence process:
  • Leaves are not granted automatically
  • A leave of absence is granted by a majority vote of the Board
  • A leave can be granted only to a member who has no outstanding debts to the club
  • Career transition leaves are handled differently so please contact the club president or Jan for further details
  • A leave is granted for a specific period of time not to exceed three months
  • A member is still responsible for rotary dues and fundraising but not meals during the leave
