Hands-On Volunteering! (No Morning Meeting)
Duluth East High School Grad Party Prep - Wednesday, June 8th
 
Harbortown volunteers are needed at the DECC prior to graduation rehearsal to receive and tag student bags/backpacks to be brought to the grad party. Bags are loaded into vehicles and transported to the Heritage Center for the all night grad party. At the Heritage, bags are unloaded, searched for contraband, and organized for student pick-up. Five volunteers are needed for each location. Please email Charity if you are able to make it (charity.star007@gmail.com).

Karl Norman Medical Clinic Dedication

Harbortown Rotary plans to dedicate the next Bolivian medical clinic project in honor of Karl Norman, a member of Skyline Rotary who passed away recently. Karl Norman had worked on several medical clinics with Mano a Mano in Bolivia, including those in Jutan Mayu, Candelleria and Sumula communities. Harbortown Rotary plans to support the construction of a medical clinic project in the 20 de Septiembre community located near Cochabamba Bolivia. Harbortown will apply for a District WCS grant to match all contributions; please let Karl Everett <karl_everett@q.com> know if you know of another Rotary Club who would like to participate in Harbortown's grant request. If you personally would like to contribute, please send your checks to the Harbortown Rotary Charitable Foundation, and request 100% go to support the construction of the medical clinic being dedicated to honor Karl Norman. They have taught me to always work hard, to remember what is important in life, and to never give up on what you want in life.

‘THE KIDS DESERVE IT’ New Morgan Park shelter for youth experiencing crisis, trauma.

The Lutheran Social Service Bethany youth shelter and family resource center in the Morgan Park neighborhood is now accommodating children and families at its new facility. LSS Bethany can house up to 17 children at a time in its short-term, emergency facility, the Dave and Lisa Goldberg Crisis Shelter. In addition, the attached Joseph and Nancy Bullyan Family Resource Center will allow for staff and social workers to guide and coach families to improve home environments and help children process trauma they may have experienced.

“We really wanted to do some work specifically with families to build stability and resiliency for them,” said Dawn Shykes, senior director of Children, Youth and Families at LSS of Minnesota.

The $3.3 million facility was built on the same lot as the previous crisis shelter, which was built in the 1970s and moved to Morgan Park in the 1980s. The rebuild began last year, but has been in the works for longer than that. Donors Joe and Nancy Bullyan and Dave and Lisa Goldberg pushed for the new facility, designating $1 million to get the ball rolling, with other community donors bringing in the rest of the funding. The Goldbergs first became familiar with LSS Bethany 11 years ago during a personal family emergency and have been supporters ever since.

“We saw what kind of facilities that they were working with, and we said, ‘Gee, we’ve got to brighten it up. We’ve got to put some paint in here.’ Well, obviously, it ended up more than paint,” Joe Goldberg said. “The staff here was so outstanding and so caring. They were working with less than desirable facilities and yet were making it happen, and we could see what good could be accomplished, so we gave them more to work with.”

The former shelter was a multilevel, single-family home that was outdated and experiencing water damage in the basement. The new shelter is much larger than the former one, allowing Bethany to house five more children. The single-level shelter is also Americans with Disabilities Act compliant and features a commercial kitchen and open layout to improve staff supervision capabilities. The family resource center is an entirely new offering for the Morgan Park location. Gregory said having a brand-new facility is a way to show the children that they are important and deserving of love and care.

“The kids deserve it,” Lisa Goldberg said. “They’re already frightened, so to come somewhere that’s clean and new helps take some of the pressure off of them, too.”

Many children who come to the crisis shelter — often experiencing family conflict, neglect, abuse, substance abuse, truancy, are running away or out-of-home placement — feel like they are in trouble, Gregory said.

One new shelter feature that Shykes and Program Director Duncan Gregory said is a highlight for them is the customized-care area. The shelter and the family resource center both have supplies for children and families who need them, including clothing and hygiene products. Children at Bethany can take everything they receive during their stay with them when they leave, including tie blankets that were donated to the shelter.

The fenced-in yard has a large patio, and a basketball court and playground are being installed. Gregory said the basketball court is a place where kids really open up about their feelings and experiences, plus it’s an outlet for them to decompress.

“Our mission is to inspire hope, change lives and build community,” Gregory said. “What a beautiful space to do that in.”

Harbortown has three upcoming volunteer opportunities. See below for details!
 
Michelina’s All You Can Eat Spaghetti Dinner (Grandma's Marathon) - Friday, June 17th 
 
Dinner is served from 11:00am - 9:00pm in the DECC's Lake Superior Ballroom.

The event appreciate the help received last year from Harbortown Rotarians and would love if Harbortown Rotary could earn even more this year. This is a great fundraiser while having a super fun time! For each hour worked, Grandma’s Marathon provides Harbortown with a $7.00 per hour per person honorarium. For those interested, please email Lisa Mitchell Krocak (lisamk1@charter.net).
  • There will be two shifts; 1st Shift is: 9:00am - 3:30pm and 2nd Shift is: 3:00pm - 10:00pm.
  • 71 individuals are needed to serve all that come to enjoy Race Weekend. As many Rotarians are welcome as Harbortown Rotary can offer. 
  • If possible, the DECC is asking those individuals who sign up to attend a brief tutorial food service meeting on Thursday, June 16 at 5:30 pm. 
  • Each volunteer will have a packet with their name on containing their Volunteer Shirt, Fitsoks, and other volunteer goodies. Each volunteer will also receive a free meal and 2 beverage tickets to use on Saturday, June 18 at Bayfront Park.
  • Grandma's will pay for everyone’s parking on Thursday and Friday. Each volunteer will have their name on the free parking list provided to the parking lot attendants.
  • Following Race Weekend on Thursday, June 23, Grandma’s Marathon is hosting the Volunteer Appreciation Party at Wade Stadium. Each volunteer is invited for an evening of baseball, all you can eat baseball fare catered by Black Woods and much more as a small token of appreciation for your help.

If you are unable to confirm a speaker, please contact Rick Oase (rickoase@yahoo.com) or Stephanie Judd (sljudd@gmail.com) for help, consider other program ideas like a Ted Talk, presenting yourself on a relevant topic or your business, or creating some excitement for a community organization you are passionate about. It is your program, so think about what is interesting and engaging to you and share it with others! 
 
If for some reason you are unable to switch duties with another member or you have simply exhausted all efforts to find a speaker, please notify Rick or Stephanie no later than 3 business days before the meeting (the Friday before the meeting your program is scheduled).
 
President Mary Durward is bringing her laptop to the Kitchi Gammi Club for weekly Harbortown meetings. Presenters may bring a USB drive with the PowerPoint presentation (or whatever is wanted to be shown on the projector while speaking). Please share this information with your program's presenter.
