This Week's Program: Adam Lorch, Chief Meteorologist KBJR
With weather in our region at the forefront of everyone's minds - forest fires, rain, draught and more, Chief Meteorologist at KBJR, Adam Lorch will share how he accomplishes forecasting for our region.

Adam's primary mission is to keep the public safe during severe weather events. Adam also acts as the station's dedicated scientist and helps communicate science-related topics to his audience.

Adam grew up in the Twin Cities and graduated from Northland College in Ashland, WI. He worked mornings for KBJR for nine years before being promoted to Chief Meteorologist a year ago.

Adam enjoys the outdoors including fishing, hiking, canoeing and backpacking. His other hobby is beer making!

August is Rotary Membership Month!
As you may remember, Scott Soderberg, District 5580 Public Image Co-Chair delivered a number of promotional Rotary yard signs to our meeting on August 18th. Read more below from the 5580 District Governor about how we can use these signs to help increase and promote our club's membership!

Lynne and I have enjoyed our visits to 17-D5580 Rotary clubs as of August 11, 2021.  Each club has its own culture, which makes them unique and yet we are all one in the world of Rotary.  As we visit clubs, we drop off yard signs as developed by DGE Kay Biga.  One sign promotes “Women in Rotary” (the initiative Kay started late last fall in our District.  The second sign “A Proud Rotarian lives here” has also been widely popular with our D5580 Rotarians.

In doing our club visits, Lynne and I have heard from several clubs that they have been forced to seek new venues due to COVID having placed businesses (mostly restaurants and hotels) in a state of flux or completely out of business.  Some clubs are now using temporary venues (churches or community centers) until a new permanent venue is found.  The one thing we share is resilience in making our meetings work for all concerned.  Making Rotary meaningful and memorable and projects measurable and sustainable is what we do!

August is Membership and New Club Development month.  Craig Loughery and Ashley Hall are our District Co-Chairs for Membership and Ashley will be concentrating her efforts more with new club development.  Rotary International President Shekhar Mehta has a goal of growing Rotary from 1.2 million to 1.3 million Rotarians in this Rotary year!  He reasons that with more people to Serve to Change Lives it impacts us to grow more to do more.  Shekhar refers to each of us as his changemakers and that we need to begin by developing our membership.  District 5580 Membership Chair Craig Loughery will be working with Co-Chair Ashley Hall and the membership committee this year to develop strategies to gain new members throughout District 5580.  Shekhar is also asking all 538 districts worldwide to form 2 new clubs in Rotary Year 2021-22.  At the University of Jamestown, ND, a new Rotaract Club was chartered with 21 new members in late July!

Rotary International President Shekhar Mehta is asking all Rotary Clubs worldwide to plan a Rotary Day of Service in this current Rotary year.  I encourage all clubs to meet with their members to determine what their club feels would be the best community project the club could do to benefit their community.  Please share your club project with our D5580 Public Image Committee (Co-Chairs Scott Soderberg and Stephen Margarit).

District 5580 has a lot to be proud of in the projects we have done in our communities and around the world, so I have selected Celebrate Rotary as the District theme for Rotary Year 2021-22.  When Lynne and I visit your club this year, we hope to inspire you by showing all the good works of District 5580.  As the Vision statement of Rotary declares: “Together we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change across the globe, in our communities and in ourselves!”

Presenter Needs at Holiday Inn
Rob Haglin received questions about what weekly program presenters need to bring. Historically, each presenter would bring their own laptop, but the Holiday Inn has now dedicated a laptop for weekly Harbortown use.

This laptop is setup with Zoom, the Owl, and the projector, so presenters do not need to bring a laptop or projector. All that is needed from presenters is a USB drive with the PowerPoint presentation (or whatever is wanted to be shown on the projector while speaking). The USB will put the presentation on the Holiday Inn laptop. Once the presentation is over, the presentation file is deleted off the laptop. Please share this information with your program's presenter.

Because Harbortown is asked by the Holiday Inn for RSVPs each week, Rob will RSVP each weekly presenter to ensure the presenter gets breakfast. If the presenter is bringing a guest, please let Rob know so he can RSVP the guest, as well.

Questions? Please contact Rob Haglin (rhanglin@awkuettl.com).

REMINDER: Dragon Boat 2022 Survey
REMINDER: You received a Google survey from my personal Gmail account.  If you did not see it come through, make sure to check your spam/junk folder.

Preliminary indications are that Club 25 is enthusiastic about taking on a partnership role in the festival.   Superior Sunrise Rotary is no longer a festival partner.

The Harbortown Rotary Board of Directors feels that our club membership needs to review our club’s role in the festival, given that our club has committed to a major role in the Bike Fest for five years.

A survey has been sent to each club member asking the following question: Are you willing to donate volunteer hours to both the Bike Fest and the Dragon Boat Fest in 2022?   There will be only a choice of yes or no.

Please be sure to vote by Friday, August 27th.

Upcoming Program Duties
If you have an upcoming program duty (please check the upcoming duty roster), please be sure to secure a speaker and provide notice to Rick Oase (rickoase@yahoo.com) or Stephanie Judd (sljudd@gmail.com) as soon as that speaker is confirmed. If you are unable to confirm a speaker, consider other program ideas like a Ted Talk, presenting yourself on a relevant topic or your business, or creating some excitement for a community organization you are passionate about. It is your program, so think about what is interesting and engaging to you and share it with others!

If for some reason you are unable to switch duties with another member or you have simply exhausted all efforts to find a speaker, please notify Rick or Stephanie no later than 3 business days before the meeting (the Friday before the meeting your program is scheduled).
